What I did for 3 years

The last week was an interesting one. For the last 3 years-or-so I’ve been working at FXhome on a brand new video product called HitFilm. For most of those 3 years it was entirely under wraps, which meant I spent an awful lot of time promising our video fans that we were working on something cool, without being able to give any details.

A month and a half ago we finally announced the product, and on July 1st it was released to the world. Turns out that releasing a product to the public after 3 years of development is a rather unique mixture of exciting and terrifying. Fortunately, most of the feedback so far has been very positive.

A big thing for me is the new website at HitFilm.com. Having nurtured the FXhome.com community for the last 10 years (!) I’m eager to make sure that HitFilm.com carries on the traditions of fairness, good discussion and tolerance that we established at FXhome and which are so rare to find on the internet.

There’s so much more still to do and we have a fairly limitless bunch of ideas (and that’s before we even start getting into suggestions from the community), so there are exciting times still to come. It’s odd to think that HitFilm has only been out for a single week – it feels like months. Feedback in the age of social media is so instant and so 2-way that everything becomes quite intensified.

Anyway, check us out over at http://hitfilm.com. :)

Final stages of VFX on Arms Race

Other than a marvelous week’s holiday to Northumberland in August (which I can actually call research, given that Of Rock And Earth is set in the same region) I’ve had a busy month-or-two.

The main occupation of my time has been my dad’s book, a biography of explorer Dr Reginald Koettlitz, which I have been busy editing. Extensive examination of ~90,000 words takes quite a while, it turns out. Who knew? That rather put everything else on the back hob, so while it was fun I’m pleased to have now completed the work.

Next up is Nigel Clegg’s short film Arms Race, a steamtech war adventure featuring all kinds of nifty props built by the art team. Post has been expectedly sluggish but I’m finally nearing completion on the ~43 VFX shots, which means I can move the film into final sound mix and grading. We hope to have a cast and crew premiere around the end of September, with public distribution of some sort shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, work at FXhome continues at breakneck speed with some truly amazing stuff coming down the pipeline. Next week there’s a new Sales and Marketing Manager starting who I’ll be working directly with, which will be an interesting shift from the dynamic of the last four years-or-so.

After all this, of course, I might actually be able to finish my own books. Woot!

New design, many distractions, Harry Potterising

So, I’ve rejiggled this website. What was once a modest blog with a single ‘About’ page has now become a fully fledged mini-portfolio, with handy links to my various writings and filmy projects all neatly arranged in the menu up top. I’ll be doing my best to keep everything up-to-date, starting with the new video I’m about to add to the VFX section. In case you can’t be arsed to go there, here it is, usefully embedded for your priori incantatumy enjoyment:

What with this and the Space Adventure DVD, I’ve really been pushing VisionLab’s limits. It’s been fun to see just how much can be wrangled out of the software, although I am also eager to broaden out my VFX skillset a little.

Meanwhile, the Hard Rain demo is pretty fab on the PS3 and Mass Effect 2 has finally lured me in. I’ll be writing about the former for Potential Gamer in a moment, with thoughts to come on the latter once I’ve had some more time with it. Also had my appraisal at work today which went alright and had some positive movement towards the future. Despite all that, I’ve still managed to get some work done on Of Rock And Earth – although never as much as I’d like.

Big thanks to Rikki for helping out with getting Typekit to talk to my WordPress template.

Arms Race

I’ve begun work editing Arms Race, the steampunk period peace set during an alternative Crimean War directed by my friend Nigel Clegg. We shot it last summer out in the wilds of Norfolk. So far it’s being kept under wraps, so that we don’t spoil the nifty set, costumes and miniatures we’ve got going on.

I was cinematographer during the shoot, which was quite a challenge given that I don’t really have any formal training. While I think I’m a decent cameraman and can work our HVX-200 nicely, and know how to frame a shot, I’m by no means a lighting man. This didn’t matter hugely given the micro-budget of the film and the location shoot, which rather limited how much control we had over such things. The weather played silly buggers all day, with the sun popping in and out of clouds every twenty minutes. It makes or some rather mis-matched footage, but hopefully nothing we can’t fix with a spot of grading magic.

Anyway, the edit hath begun: I really liked editing. It’s the most creative and least stressful part of the process, demanding you think laterally to work around potential limitations with the material. It’s also where the film can be reinvented or ballsed up. It’s essentially a counterpart to the scriptwriting process: the story begins with the script and ends with editing. Everything else is technique – vital nonetheless, of course.

What else? Well, Axel Wilkinson, a long-time remote colleague and (I’d like to say) friend of mine from the States is arriving in Norwich tomorrow morning. He should be in the air right now, in fact. He’s always been one of our most supportive customers, testers and community members at FXhome, as evidence by him winning a community-voted award in 2009. Great guy and I’m really looking forward to meeting him and working with him face-to-face for the first time while he’s here on a consultancy basis next week.

Currently pondering projects: my three at the moment are Evinden, Of Rock And Earth and Arms Race. Here’s their current status:

Evinden: First draft complete, currently with Slava and Nadia for some feedback. Regardless of when that feedback arrives, I’ll be moving into the second draft as soon as my other book hits first draft…

Of Rock And Earth: Three quarters towards a first draft. Slow going due to going back to work and being distracted by the likes of Dragon Age and Uncharted 2, but I’m hoping to accelerate progress soon. Which won’t be easy once I hit February and go skiing for a week. Anyway, this is my current main priority – need to get a first draft finished so I can go back to Evinden, as well as try my hand at some short stories.

Arms Race: Edit just begun, opening sequence complete in rough form. Hope to have a VERY rough first draft by the end of next week, ready for some extreme tightening. We can then identify and start work on the VFX shots.

Busy weekend coming up, meanwhile, which is never good for creative projects: Axeman arrives, we’re out for a meal with friends on Saturday, and off to my parents on Sunday. Plus we have to fit in buying skiing equipment at some point.

Right, Nadia’s busy stabbing hurlocks (evil things in Dragon Age, not the fat guy from Lost), so I think I’ll do some novel writing!

107092 – Character death

Written an enormous amount tonight (for me, at least), romping through a particularly crucial scene. Very, very exciting stuff. Notably it also marks a major character death, which was extremely creepy to write – all the foreshadowing leading up to it, the long, drawn-out moment itself, and the too-late realisation. Hopefully it’ll be as effective for readers as it was for me writing it! Of course, it’s couple with a couple of major twists as well, so it’s really one helluva chapter.

A massive action sequence ensues immediately afterwards, so I’m going to finish up for the night and concentrate on that at the weekend. I can’t wait!

On another note, finally having the roof in the utility room fixed  tomorrow (woot), and going to Trattoria Rustica again, this time with my folks who are in town. Should be fun and tasty.

What else? Josh and Lucy are both out of the office, in Vegas and Australia respectively, so it’s been a bit of a mad house. Well, simultaneously quiet due to two less people and insanely busy due to me having to fill in for them in certain areas. Just about got it covered but, as always, there’s never enough time in the day! Especially in a week that sees the release of a new product.

Watchmen this weekend. I’m nervously excited – Jonathan Woss gave it an excellent, considered review.

27 days to go.
